6 Tips for a Better Period


Period pain, cravings, mood swings, and all the other symptoms that come along with it are no fun. As someone who would get pretty bad period pain, cravings and other pms symptoms I was on the hunt to find some remedies that actually worked.

I started looking up different remedies and came across a women named Alissa Vitti. To summarize she explains that hormonal acne, pms, and alllll those symptoms we experience are not necessarily "required" to be a part of our flow. We should be able to experience pms free cycles/periods. Can you imagine my brain while watching this video? To say the least I was mind blown. Right away, I downloaded her app called MyFlo.

The app has really good information in it for tracking your flow. You can add your symptoms, then go to your recommendations and it will explain why you are experiencing them. A lot of it actually comes down to nutrition. During different times in your cycles you can add and eliminate certain foods to help with your symptoms. It’s really informational to learn why you’re having a certain craving, or what your body is lacking due to that symptom your experiencing.

I decided to do a little more digging. I found out about an essential oil called Clary Sage. It's good for relaxation, as well as alleviating cramps when rubbed on your lower abdomen. This stuff seriously works magic! I’ve used it for 6 months now and it has definitely aided in alleviating my cramps.

Have you ever made the connection that your flow isn’t as bad when you’ve been really active? When I'm most active I usually have a better flow! Now this is all whole other topic on itself but my motivation is not always 100% when trying to get my butt to the gym. So you can see how my periods fluctuate throughout the year. Sometimes it’s also important to keep in mind that during your flow, the best exercise can be a good nap, some Netflix, and healthy snacks. So don't feel pressured to try and work out during that time of the month, because the best workout might be doing nothing! With that being said, getting your body to move a minimum of just 20 minutes per day can make all the difference when it comes to that time of the month.

Another great way to improve your flow is making sure you get in your cruciferous vegetables! These veggies aid in balancing hormones. Common cruciferous vegetables include:

  • Arugula (rocket)

  • Bok choy

  • Broccoli and broccoli sprouts

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Cabbage

  • Cauliflower

  • Collard greens

  • Soy

By following the MyFlo app recommendations, being active regularly, and increasing my cruciferous vegetables within the last 6 months my flow has been sooo much better! I also can’t live without Clary Sage oil anymore. I think the oil makes all the difference when it comes to cramps, so really make sure to check that one out!

  6. Check in with your Doctor or Naturopath to see if you can get your hormones tested and go from there!
